Introduction

Pharmaceutical vessels are a common type of equipment extensively employed in the pharmaceutical industry. They are specifically designed for areas where liquids play a crucial role in manufacturing processes. The primary purpose of these vessels is to facilitate the production and storage of diverse liquids required in the pharmaceutical industry. Examples of departments where pharmaceutical vessels find application include Oral Liquid Dosage and the Parenteral department.

Types of Pressure Vessels

Manufacturing Vessels

These vessels are utilized in the pharmaceutical industry for the production of pharmaceutical goods. They are equipped with essential accessories such as jackets and temperature control features. Mechanical assemblies like mixers or agitators are incorporated to facilitate component mixing. Specialized pneumatic fittings ensure the smooth transfer of various chemicals and solvents to and from the manufacturing vessel.

Storage Vessels

Pharmaceutical products are stored in dedicated storage tanks for future use. These tanks serve as temporary storage between different operational stages. For example, during laboratory testing, pharmaceutical products are kept in storage tanks until the results are satisfactory, and then they are transferred to containers for packaging. Storage tanks are also used to store purified or distilled water before it is distributed throughout the plant.

Pressure Vessels

Pressure vessels are sealed containers designed to withstand high pressures, exceeding atmospheric pressure. They are distinct from other pharmaceutical process vessels. Any vessel intended to operate at pressures greater than 15 psi is classified as a pressure vessel. Operating a pressure vessel above its rated pressure can lead to explosions and damage, posing risks to personnel, equipment, and raw materials. Safety valves are installed on these vessels to prevent over-pressurization. The safety valve, rated at the vessel's maximum pressure, opens and releases excess fluid when the pressure exceeds the rated value. The vent closes and the valves cease fluid leakage when the pressure returns to a normal range.

Application of Pharmaceutical Vessels in the Pharma Industry

Parenteral Department

The pharmaceutical branch known as the parenteral department focuses on producing dosage forms that are directly injected into the body. These products are manufactured using process vessels, which are filled with liquid active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). To facilitate mixing, a mixer is mounted on the vessel. In cases where high temperatures are required during the production process, temperature control capabilities are added. Once the product is complete, it is transferred to pressure vessels for storage. Pharmaceutical items in the parenteral department are stored in pressure vessels under pressurized nitrogen gas to prevent contamination. Pressure vessels are also used during filling and testing procedures in laboratories.

Oral Liquid Dosage

Vessels are used for the manufacturing of oral liquid dosage forms that are administered orally. These vessels are also utilized for storing the liquid during laboratory testing and filling procedures.

Pharma Water Systems

Raw water is treated and processed into purified and distilled forms at water treatment facilities. Storage containers, such as storage vessels, are employed in pharma water systems to hold the output water. Before the water is distributed or circulated at the point of use, it is initially stored in these containers. The water levels in these storage tanks are coordinated with the facility responsible for producing purified and distilled water. When the storage vessel reaches its full capacity, the plant's operations are temporarily suspended until the water is used up and the water level decreases. Once the water levels fall below a certain threshold, the water plant automatically starts refilling the water to maintain the desired level.

Accessories for Pharmaceutical Vessels

Load Cell

Load cells are utilized to calculate the weight of the vessel. The weight of the vessel is directly proportional to the volume of liquid it contains, which is calibrated based on the vessel's volume.

Level

The level sensor is employed to determine the liquid level inside a vessel. In pharmaceutical process vessels, both contact and contactless level sensors are used. Contact type sensors are installed on the vessel, and when the liquid comes into contact with the sensor, it indicates the required liquid level. At the vessel opening, contactless sensors are mounted, utilizing various technologies such as radar and ultrasound to wirelessly measure the level.

Temperature

Temperature sensors are used to measure the temperature of the liquid inside the process vessels. These sensors can be either digital or analogue in nature.

Conclusion

In conclusion, pharmaceutical vessels play a crucial role in the pharmaceutical industry, providing essential equipment for the production and storage of various liquids. They are widely used in departments such as Oral Liquid Dosage and the Parenteral department. Manufacturing vessels are equipped with accessories and mechanical assemblies to facilitate product manufacturing, while storage vessels serve as temporary storage for pharmaceutical products. Pressure vessels, designed to withstand high pressures, require safety measures to prevent accidents. These vessels find application in the parenteral department, where dosage forms for direct injection are produced. Oral liquid dosage forms are also manufactured and stored in vessels. Additionally, pharmaceutical water systems rely on storage vessels to hold purified and distilled water. Accessories like load cells, level sensors, and temperature sensors enhance the functionality and monitoring of pharmaceutical vessels. Overall, pharmaceutical vessels are indispensable in ensuring the safe and efficient production of pharmaceutical products.
