The TSSA is a not-for-profit, self-funded organization that is dedicated to promoting and enforcing public safety.
Since 1997, the TSSA has been accountable to the Government of Ontario in providing safety services in four key sectors:
- Boilers and pressure vessels, and operating engineers
- Eelevating devices, amusement devices and ski lifts
- Fuels
- Upholstered and stuffed articles
The TSSA is required to enforce the Technical Standards and Safety Act and regulations, but they also promote and enforce actions to continuously improve safety. The organization acts as both regulator and an advocate of safety standards throughout the province.
What does the TSSA do?
The TSSA has a number of activities that allow them to both promote and enforce safety.
The TSSA influences safety codes and regulations by supporting government in developing regulations and participating in developing and setting standards. They also inform and educate users and industry participants about safety practices, new codes, regulations and requirements.
The organization reviews new technology and modifications to existing equipment to ensure they comply with all codes and regulations. If a non-compliance situations occur, the TSSA takes action before or after a safety incident occurs. If an incident does occur, the TSSA will investigate.
The TSSA is also essential in training installations to properly train trades people and properly examine and certify these trades people.
